USER'S MANUAL SCREEN SM3.02 PAGE 1 OF 6
This screen is for the purpose of displaying or printing any part of
the user's manual, in case you don't have a printed copy. The complete
user's manual contains a table of contents, installation instructions,
tutorial guide and appendices that are not displayable from the Stock
Charting System menus.
The User's Manual screen is not available from the Master Menu screen.
To display the User's Manual screen, you must first start the Stock
Charting System from DOS with the command SM3 <Enter>. When the copy-
right screen appears, DO NOT press Enter again. Instead, press the
M key and the User's Manual screen will appear.
The User's Manual consists of a number of chapters. Some of the chap-
ters correspond to various screen displays in the Stock Charting System.
These chapters can be accessed in either of two ways: from the User's
Manual screen or from HELP functions in corresponding menus.
ALL chapters are accessible from the User's Manual screen.

All of the menus in the system have a HELP function. Typing H to invoke
a HELP function will result in the display of the corresponding chapter
of the User's Manual (which the menus refer to as HELP screens). The
information is presented one screenfull at a time. The screen pages are
numbered on the upper right corner of the screen and each time you press
the Enter key you get the next screen page. In this instance, you can
only display, not print.
The page headings may differ between HELP screens and User's Manual chap-
ters, because of the different contexts in which they can be displayed.
The HELP screens may appear to contain some redundant information. This
is because they also function as chapters, which the user may be reading
from an easy chair in the living room and not from a computer screen.
This is admittedly a bit of a compromise. On the positive side, though,
it allows the author to make more timely program improvements - and
corresponding updates to the User's Manual - without the necessity of
updating two separate sets of documentation. This allows the users
to have both forms of documentation, and to make his or her own personal
choice as to which one(s) to use.

The User's Manual screen displays the Table of Contents. Use the up-
arrow, down-arrow, PgUp, PgDn, Home and End keys to select an individual
chapter to view or print. The display will "scroll" automatically as
required. Press Esc or X to return to the copyright screen; press Esc
a second time to quit and return to DOS.
The other menu functions are described next:
V = VIEW the selected chapter. Information is displayed on the screen,
starting at the beginning. Use the up-arrow, down-arrow, PgUp,
PgDn, Home and End keys to move the display "window". The display
will "scroll" automatically as required.
Your place in the chapter is indicated by the percentage number on
the upper right corner of the screen. For example 46% means the
bottom of the screen is 46% of the way through the chapter.

P = PRINT the selected chapter only. Chapters DO NOT have to be printed
in any particular order. No matter which chapter you print, the
printed sheets will be correctly numbered in the format x.y where
x is the chapter number and y is the page number within the chapter.
For example 6.2 is the second page in Chapter 6. Most chapters are
2-4 printed pages.
T = TABLE of contents. This function prints the entire Table of Con-
tents (one page), plus a cover sheet for the User Manual. These
may be printed any time without affecting page or chapter numbers.
E = ENTIRE manual. This function prints the ENTIRE User's Manual -
including the Table of Contents and cover sheet - if the selector
block is on Chapter 1. If the selector block is on any other chap-
ter, this function will print chapters sequentially, beginning with
the selected chapter, until it reaches the end or the process is
interrupted with the Esc key.
The selector block will indicate which chapter is being printed,
and will automatically advance as chapters are finished.

The User's Manual can be printed on almost any kind of printer, inclu-
ding lasers and ink jets. No special printer features are required or
used. The printer must be able to recognize a form feed character
(ASCII 12), which ejects the current page. It must also recognize the
carriage return (ASCII 13) and line feed (ASCII 10) characters. These
are standard features which most printers have. The program will not
print more than 59 lines on any one sheet. Pagination is automatic.
After invoking a print function, you will be asked if you want to pause
between pages. If you reply (Y)es the printer will pause after ejecting
each individual sheet. You might do this if you want to inspect the
sheets as they come out, or if you are feeding individual sheets into an
older printer, or your printer has a tendency to jam. You can press the
Esc key to cancel printing after each page.

Printing begins on the line where the print head is at, so first make
sure the paper is loaded the way you want it. Most printers have an
indicator light called "on line" or "ready". This light will be separ-
ate from the "power on" indicator. The "on line" indicator MUST be on
for the printer to print.
NOTE: If you have just used your printer with another program for some
other purpose, it may need to be re-set manually before starting to
print. Some programs do not bother to re-set the printer after they are
finished, and the results can be unpredictable!
You can press the Esc key at any time to stop the process. The printing
may stop after a few lines. But if your printer has a large buffer, it
may not stop and you may have to turn it off.
If there is a printer problem such as being out of paper or not ready,
the program should trap the error and flash a "printer fault" message.
If the system hangs up, try pressing Ctrl-Break.
